Two Way Immersion
Pacheco
School's Two Way Immersion Program offers the San Luis Coastal
Unified elementary students the unique and exciting opportunity
to acquire literacy in two languages, English and Spanish.
This is an "additive" bilingual program in
that English speakers will acquire Spanish, and Spanish speakers
will acquire English, but will not be at risk of losing their
first language.
The program began in Kindergarten during the 1996-1997 school
year. This year, it will expand into the fifth grade. Total
implementation will take seven years.
Goals of the Program
-
To maintain or
exceed current levels of academic achievement in all subject
areas for students of both languages, as measured by the
District assessment program.
-
To have all students
exit sixth grade bilingual and biliterate in English and
Spanish.
-
To have students,
parents, and staff form friendships with others from different
ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, and in the process, learn
to appreciate the diversity that exists in our community.
-
To raise the
self-esteem of all students.
