The Open Enrollment Process

Pacheco School is open to all students and families living within the borders of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, including the communities of San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay, Los Osos, and Avila Beach.

Open Enrollment: March 2 - 27, 2020.

Each year we conduct an open enrollment period for families to sign up their incoming kindergarten students. Students must turn 5 before September 1st of the school year they begin, to be eligible to apply. Families report to their home school with 3 documents:

  1. Birth Certificate
  2. Vaccination record
  3. TWO Proof of address (Any bill or copy of lease etc.)

You will be given a packet of papers to fill out. If you wish to attend the Pacheco Program you must inform the secretary at your home school that you would like to apply for open enrollment to attend Pacheco. You will return all papers to your home school.

A spot will be reserved for your child at your home school until your open enrollment status is determined.


At the end of the open enrollment period, if we have more applicants than we have space for, then a lottery will be conducted. This year the lottery will be conducted in April at the district office. Each family applying for open enrollment to Pacheco will be given an equal chance at a spot. Siblings of existing Pacheco students are allowed in automatically. The remaining spots will be filled via the lottery. It does not matter when during the open enrollment period you apply, but it must be within the dates of open enrollment. After the available spots are filled, we form a waiting list for those students who do not get in. The waiting list remains through the end of your child’s first grade year. In general, students are not allowed into the program after the first grade as they would be too far behind in Spanish acquisition to be successful. There are exceptions to this rule from time to time (students coming from other two-way programs etc.), these are reviewed on a case by case basis.

Kinder Orientation:

Several orientation sessions are held during open enrollment to explain our program to prospective parents. Parents have the opportunity to visit classrooms and hear about the structure of the program. English sessions will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on dates to be determined. There will be a Spanish session from 9:00 - 11:00 on date to be determined. Please call the school office to reserve a spot.

Students from outside the district:

We generally do not accept students from outside the district boundaries. Families can apply for an interdistrict transfer if they so choose. These cases should be discussed with the principal before any such application is made.
